BAUMER’S BRIDGE BITES
Using Your Inner Voice
There has been a multiple number of times I get a complaint that E/W or N/S is getting all the points. The truth of the matter is that winning bridge means defending better than others on the same boards that the field plays as well as finding the best contract and declaring that contract well. You get a chance to make a lead directing double by doubling opponents artificial bids, such as: 1N P 2C (Stayman) ? 1N P 2D (Transfer) ? 1D P 1S P 1N P 2C (New minor force) ? 1N P 2H (transfer) ? 1N P 2S (transfer) ? And all Blackwood or Gerber responses You can increase the odds of partner making the best lead for your side by doubling appropriately. People tend to lose focus if a run of boring hands occurs. Use your inner voice and actively double when appropriate. Its easier on partner and will reap dividends. PS. If your partner is an aggressive bidder, do not overdue doubling, or partner may start taking saves that may cost too much. You know best concerning your partnership and you can adjust if too many phantom saves are taken.
It is not the handling of difficult hands that makes the winning player. There aren’t enough of them. It is the ability to avoid messing up the easy ones…. Alan Sontag
